Commentary From The Cedar Lounge Revolution

3rd October 2022

Here is an interesting document from Democratic Left from April/May 1995 which frames itself as the newsletter of the Dublin North Central Branch of that party. The long-time candidate for DL in DNC, Helen Lahert is strongly promoted. It is a very local document but notable are short pieces on then DL Ministers and Junior Ministers in the Rainbow coalition government formed between Fine Gael, Labour and Democratic Left which had come to power the previous year.

One notable aspect are the adverts in the document. But overall the content is very local.

One panel notes:

A NOTE FROM HELEN LAHERT:

Democratic Left is Ireland’s socialist party. We have an active branch in Dublin North Central. Why not Join us?

Wonder what’s with all the car related ads? Car dealers, crash repairs, motor factors, car paints and a school of motoring! And that’s pretty much it… Odd.

That is weird now you mention it. It has the feel of someone going involved in selling advertising in the background – something like when schools do advertising for a brochure for a play and they get all the local Cllrs or TDs to have an ad in it. It’d be interesting to see another edition in case there was another area of business that was approached.

dealing in used cars or car parts was a booming business in the early/mid 90ies on the continent, not always with the best reputation

DL was a promoter of the internal combustion engine. DL was a promoter of greenhouse gases and the oil industry and the destruction of our world by climate collapse. All you ex-DLers on here, hang yisser heads in shame.
