This is a very useful addition to the Archive. An edition of Socialist Worker from the Socialist Workers Movement from 2001. This was published shortly after the defeat of the Treaty of Nice at the Referendum in the Republic . The front page article argues against a rerun of that referendum. The piece notes:
Our rulers may see the EU as the home of progress an civilisation. But the population does not. They see it as a growing military power —one that could quickly use its Rapid Reaction Force to fight “resource wars”.
EU pressure is the excuse used by Irish politicians to sell off Aer Lingus and the ESB. And it is increasingly run by the most undemocratic means with power concentrated in elite politicians fromthe bigger states.
Other articles address a range of issues including immigration, protests in Gothenburg against a visit by then US President George Bush and gains by the DUP in elections. A column by Eamonn McCann criticises Gerry Adams for positive quotes about Bush’s visit. An article calls for ‘Abortion Rights Now’ and reports on the Women on the Waves abortion ship in Belfast.
There’s also an interview with French anti-capitalist José Bové and reports on Algeria and the G8. Other articles look at the fact 97% of residents in Dublin didn’t pay their bin tax. There’s also book reviews and a report on The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy.
