We were very sorry to hear of the recent death of Rayner Lysaght (D. R. O’Connor Lysaght), Marxist political activist and historian, who has been a significant contributor to the Irish Left over the course of decades.

Rayner was involved in Irish Trotskyism since the 1960s, through the Fourth International organisations, Revolutionary Marxist Group, Peoples Democracy and Socialist Democracy. He wrote extensively on Left politics and Irish history, and was a long-term contributor to the Irish Labour History Society.

We are grateful to Rayner for his contribution to discussion on the CLR, and glad to have had the pleasure of meeting him in recent years.

Our sympathy to his family, friends and comrades.

Sincere condolences to Rayner's family, friends and comrades. He was a very unique person. An intellectual of high standing but much too modest. As a Republican in Limerick who worked in many anti-imperialist campaigns with in his comrades in the RMG/MSR/Peoples Democracy such as Mary O'Donnell, Joe Harrington, Ciaran MacNamidhe and the late and much lamented Pat O;Connor I got to know Rayner a small bit and one couldn't help liking him for the erudite and gracious gentleman that he was - not to mention his quiet but fierce commitment as a revolutionary socialist activist. May his memory live on.
