Commentary From The Cedar Lounge Revolution

Many thanks to the person who forwarded this to the Archive, among a number of leaflets from Ronald Reagan’s visit to Ireland in 1984.

The campaign had the following affiliates:

Action from Ireland Association of Chilean Refugees, Comhlamh, Dawn Group, El Salvador Support Committee, Filipino – Irish Group, Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement, Ireland – Cuba Friendship Society, Irish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Ireland Chile Support Committee, Latin American Solidarity Committee, Nicaraguan Support Group, Pax Christi, Sisters for Justice, Student Christian Movement, Trade Union CND, WOmen’s Group for Disarmament, Irish Mennonite Community, Irish Committee for European Security and Cooperation, Committee for Traveller’s Rights, Irish Sovereignty Movement, U.S.I, Irish Friends of Palestine, Irish Democratic Youth Movement.

The leaflet states:

Ireland has always championed the right to the self determination of all nations and claimed her right to an independent foreign policy. As citizens of a neutral country and as citizens of the-world, we have-a responsibility now to express non-violently and effectively our deep concern for justice and peace. We must demonstrate to Mr. Reagan.

And:

  • The Irish people reject bullets, missiles and nuclear weapons as tools of diplomacy.
  • We as a nation care about the millions of our fellow human beings who cannot march and who are suffering from repressive, dictatorial and murderous regimes.
  • We are concerned about the future of, our children and our earth.
  • We are committed as a people to the cause of justice and peace. This is our chance. We have a responsibility of conscience not to be silent. Join us in our peaceful march and make your stand for the lives and futures of us all.
