Commentary From The Cedar Lounge Revolution

Another important addition to the Archive, and many thanks to the person who forwarded this document.

This publication dates from a time of conflict within Republican Sinn Fein. This was published by one of the contending groups within the party.

The past year has also seen a group who claim to be Republican but have abandoned any principle of Irish Republicanism after being compromised by the Free State. No amount of lies or half truths can hid the fact that they are irrelevant and do now command the support or respect of any true Republicans. Instead of accepting that the Republican Movement has abandoned them, they engage in a campaign of character assassination and smear tactics. We are giving formal warning that this activity must cease forthwith or else they shall suffer the consequences.

One very striking assertion is the following:

In fact the leader of their diminishing clique, Ruairi O’Bradaigh admitted he had been duped by those around him in holding the almost secret conference , yet he is still in their clutches and by approving Iies has reduced himself and damaged his reputation.

The article argues:

The very future of the Republican Movement is now threatened by the series of events unfolding north and south of the border. The devolution of police and justice powers is seen as a milestone on the road to a stable and acceptable entity to be known as Northern Ireland.

The ongoing normalisation of British rule throughout the entire island of Ireland continues apace and underlines the current moves of London, Dublin and Stormont to consign the traditional aspiration of the Irish nation to a united Ireland to the dustbin of history.

The combined forces of the British, Irish and Stormont administrations are now ranged against the aims of the Republican Movement and Republicans who oppose the Stormont Agreement are now described as terrorist criminals.

The demonisation of Republicans who adhere to the traditional principles of Irish Republicanism – namely to break the connection with England – is designed to isolate and gradually suffocate the Movement.

And:

While those who support the Stormont Agreement are solid and united in their stance, the opposing Republicans are divided and diverse and driven apart by a deliberate strategy devised by the Provisional’s. This strategy is to fracture the Movement – to render it into factions and then gradually isolate and criminalise them.
