The Limerick Soviet Began
On the 14th of April 1919, the Limerick Soviet was declared. It lasted until the 27th of April, during which period the soviet managed food and fuel supplies and printed a currency.
In response to the death of an RIC constable during an attempt to rescue IRA Volunteer Robert Byrne, Martial law had been imposed by the British army, controlling movement in and out of a large area of the city. The United Trades and Labour Council called a general strike in response.
